States, considered the smallest territorial unit, are also the most numerous group. The entire game mechanics are based around them.
Each state has a set of settings, that you can access and read in State Info window in the game. There are two types of information: informative and dynamic. Informative state information is only a short, static information to the player. Into that category fall things like Major City, Population and Market Share Percentage. Dynamic information are information, that shift the total Market Share power and change the dynamics of the game. Into that category falls most of the information, like State Development, Urbanization, Terrain and Forestation Levels, as well as airport and harbour presence or conflicts presence. Those shape the state as it is.
State Development: State Development Level defines how developed the state is, accounting all the infrastructure, local cities and towns and any means of transport in, out and within the state.
State Urbanization: State Urbanization Level defines how urbanized the entire state is, accounting all cities, towns and villages. There are five levels of urbanization: nothingness, towns, major cities, industrial region and agglomeration.
State Terrain: State Terrain Level defines the domimant type of terrain within the state. There are several types of terrains, including glaciers, deserts, islands, mountains, hills and plains.
State Forestation: State Forestation Level or State Forests Level in other words, defines how forestated the area of a state isand what type of forest is it. It causes different shifts with the Market Share.
Harbours and Airports: The state can either have or don't have its own harbour and airport. If harbour/airport is large enough to receive larger cargo transports, it is considered and state can have it registered. Harbours and airports allow sending and receiving cargo transports via ships and planes.
Conflicts: There are two types of conflicts: disputes and wars. Both cost player a lot in terms of lost income in the state, so it is best to avoid states with active conflicts going on.
What are Ghost States?
Ghost States are states that were once part of the game, but were since removed due to various reasons. Most of them were merged with different states, as they were hard to access. Some of the ghost states could be found in USA, Mexico, Germany and UK.
Other significant territory types?
Countries are the medium size territorial units. They do not play such a big role in Market Dominion. Countries help player properly target their share disposal and keep everything organized in the local region. The main purpose of countries in Market Dominion is to have some sense of political borders in the game. Other than a slight positive modifiers for your home country and country you are already in, there are not that many changes. It is mostly political. Each state can be communist or capitalist and so is the entire country. If the country is a different ideology than your home state, you will have a hard time to adapt your model and market there. The effects from politics and country model are less visible than effects from states.
Continents are the largest size territorial units. They do not play any big role, other than additional positive modifier in your home continent for your company. They are not significant for the player's strategy.
